A Prayer of Reflection and Deliverance from Self-Serving Leadership
"And Gaal the son of Ebed said, Who is Abimelech, and who is Shechem, that we should serve him? is not he the son of Jerubbaal? and Zebul his officer? serve the men of Hamor the father of Shechem: for why should we serve him?" - Judges 9:28

O Almighty God, our refuge and strength, we come before You today with humble spirits and open hearts, seeking Your wisdom and direction in the tumultuous times in which we live. Today, as we ponder the words spoken by Gaal the son of Ebed in Judges 9:28, we are reminded of the challenges of leadership and the importance of discernment in whom we choose to follow.
"And Gaal the son of Ebed said, Who is Abimelech, and who is Shechem, that we should serve him? is not he the son of Jerubbaal? and Zebul his officer? serve the men of Hamor the father of Shechem: for why should we serve him?" Lord, these words echo throughout history, as they express a profound discontent with authority that serves its own interests rather than the welfare of the people.
Father, we acknowledge that in every generation, there are leaders who rise not for the benefit of those they govern, but for their own gain. Abimelech, the son of Jerubbaal, represents those who take on power without the rightful heart of a servant, disregarding the needs of their citizens. We ask, Lord, that You grant us discernment to recognize such leaders in our lives, be they in our communities, institutions, or even in our own hearts.
Help us, O God, to be vigilant and aware of the traits of self-serving leadership. Just as Gaal questioned the legitimacy of Abimelech and his officer Zebul, instill in us the courage to question those who wield authority unjustly. Teach us to look beyond titles and positions, to the fruit of the actions they exhibit. Guide us to seek leaders who embody Your principles of justice, mercy, and integrity.
In our quest for righteous leadership, we also recognize our own roles as citizens. From our local communities to the global stage, we are called to engage with our leaders and hold them accountable. May we not just passively accept the authority of those who seek to manipulate for their own agenda, but inspire ourselves and others to advocate for righteousness and truth. Instill in us a spirit of courage similar to Gaal's, to speak out against the injustices that surround us and to promote the good of all, rather than of a select few.
Lord, forgive us for the times we have failed to question authority or have been complicit in supporting those who do not reflect Your righteousness. We ask for Your forgiveness for the apathy that can settle in our hearts when we feel powerless or overwhelmed. Awaken us, O Lord, to the call of our conscience and empower us with strength and resolve to seek out leaders who embody Your heart for justice and peace.
As we reflect on the men of Hamor who Gaal referred to in his statement, remind us that our loyalty belongs to those who uplift our communities, those who seek the common good, and those who sincerely care for the welfare of all people. May we not serve those who neglect their responsibilities and trample upon the rights of others.
Lord, renew our spirits today, and fill us with hope for the future. Empower us to be active participants in shaping the world according to Your will. Help us to rise in unity, seeking out leaders who do not just wear the title of authority but live out the calling of servanthood.
In this critical time, we pray for Your divine guidance in choosing our leaders wisely, knowing that You have placed us in positions where our voices matter. May we, like Gaal, be unafraid to speak the truth and challenge voices that seek to lead us astray, always resting in the assurance that You are sovereign over all. We declare Your glory and trust in Your provision as we step into our calling to promote righteousness in our spheres of influence.
In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
