A Prayer for Wisdom in Matters of Inheritance
“And one of the company said unto him, Master, speak to my brother, that he divide the inheritance with me.” — Luke 12:13
Heavenly Father,
We come before You today, united in spirit and purpose, seeking wisdom, understanding, and grace in our lives. As we reflect on the poignant words from Your Holy Scripture in Luke 12:13, where one of the company implored Jesus, saying, "Master, speak to my brother, that he divide the inheritance with me," we are reminded of the deep complexities surrounding family dynamics, inheritance, and our hearts' true desires.
Lord, we acknowledge that in this world, possessions and inheritances can often lead to divisions, strife, and misunderstandings among family members and loved ones. The plea made to Jesus reveals not just a cry for material equity but also a deeper longing for harmony within the family unit. You have called us to be peacemakers, and we ask You for guidance to pursue peace in all our relationships, especially in times of financial or material disputes.
We stand before You humbled and aware of our human tendencies to covet and to compare. Grant us the wisdom to understand that earthly treasures are temporary and that true riches lie in the love and unity we share with our families. Help us, Lord, to seek first Your Kingdom and righteousness, so that all these things shall be added unto us (Matthew 6:33). Let us not become consumed by what we believe we are entitled to, but rather become generous in spirit, reflecting Your goodness in our dealings with one another.
In those moments when we feel the injustice of perceived favoritism or unfair division among inheritance matters, help us to remind ourselves of what truly matters—the bonds we share and the love we have for one another. Instill within us a heart that seeks understanding and reconciliation rather than strife and entitlement. Let us approach our brothers and sisters with an attitude of compassion and grace, echoing Your love and mercy.
Father, we pray for the ability to communicate openly and honestly with one another. Help us to express our concerns and desires in ways that honor our family and bring glory to Your name. Teach us to listen, to empathize, and to negotiate fairly when conflict arises. Give us patience and a spirit of humility, so we may avoid gossip, contention, and frustration as we navigate these sensitive issues.
We lift up all families who are facing division over inheritance matters. May Your light shine on paths of reconciliation and healing. We pray for those who may feel they have been wronged, for those who feel entitled, and for those who are burdened by financial stress. Bring comfort to hearts that are hurting, and let Your peace—a peace that surpasses all understanding—guard their hearts and minds in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:7).
Lord, we also recognize that sometimes, we must make difficult decisions regarding the distribution of our earthly possessions. As we consider our legacies, may we be reminded of the eternal inheritance that awaits us in heaven—a treasure that neither moth nor rust can corrupt (Matthew 6:20). Help us to set our sights on what truly matters in Your Kingdom, showing love, mercy, and generosity in our earthly stewardship.
Finally, we pray for wisdom for those in positions to amend laws or create policies around inheritance, that they may consider equity and fairness not just as legal terms but as matters of the heart. May our interactions in these circumstances reflect the teachings of Christ and may we always prioritize unity over possessions.
We thank You, dear Father, for hearing our prayer. We trust that You are aware of our needs and wishes, and we commit our families and our relationships into Your hands, believing that You are the ultimate source of peace, wisdom, and unity. May Your will be done in our lives and our families, now and forevermore.
In Jesus' precious name, we pray, Amen.
