A Prayer for Humility and Grace
“Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican.” — Luke 18:10
Heavenly Father,
As I come before You today, I am reminded of the profound lesson found in the words of Your Holy Scripture, in the book of Luke, chapter 18, verse 10, where it states, "Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican." Lord, I sit in reverence, acknowledging that these two men represent the heart of mankind in their approach to You. I seek to understand the depth of their hearts and the lessons You have laid before us through their story.
O Lord, I come before You with a heart open and yearning for Your truth. I recognize that I often fall into the trap of the Pharisee, who stood and prayed with himself, praising his own virtues and boasting of his righteousness. In my quest for approval and affirmation, I sometimes forget the humility that is required to enter into Your presence. I confess my pride and self-righteousness, elements of my spirit that prevent me from truly connecting with You. Remind me, gracious Father, that it is not by my works or my deeds that I gain favor in Your sight, but by Your mercy and grace alone.
And then there was the publican—the tax collector—who stood afar off, not daring to lift his eyes to heaven; but he smote upon his breast, crying, "God be merciful to me, a sinner." Oh Lord, give me the heart of the publican! Instill in me a spirit that seeks Your mercy instead of boasting in my own strength. Help me to recognize my own shortcomings and to approach You with a heart that is willing to repent and humble myself before the greatness of Your love.
I pray, Lord, that I may embrace humility in my daily walk. Show me the areas of my life where pride may be creeping in, where I may be judging others instead of focusing on my own faults. Let me never forget that all have sinned and fall short of Your glory, and that it is only by Your grace that I am saved. Teach me to extend that same grace to those around me, to see the heart of the publican in others—the longing for forgiveness, the yearning for acceptance, the need for love.
Father, may I bear witness to the astonishing transformation that can occur in a heart that recognizes its need for You. Help me to create a space where others feel welcomed to come, as they are, to encounter Your grace. I pray for a spirit of community, where we can gather as a body of believers, helping one another to lift our burdens before You and seeking Your mercy collectively.
As I reflect on these two men, I understand that it is not about comparing myself to others; it is about my individual relationship with You, Lord. I don’t want to stand among the crowd, puffing up my own ego. Instead, I desire to be like the humble publican, knowing my position before You—a sinner in need of Your transformative love.
Lord, grant me the wisdom to know when to stand back and allow others to lead, and when to be a source of encouragement and support. Fill my heart with compassion for those who feel lost or unworthy. Let my prayers be ones of intercession for the world around me, seeking Your grace to abound in places where darkness seems to reign.
As I step out into the world today, let my heart beat in rhythm with Your love, and my actions reflect Your humility. May I be slow to judge and quick to compassion, always remembering the lessons drawn from the temple that day—the prayer that moves mountains is not one of pride, but one of a heart that finds itself broken and yet redeemed by Your love.
In the name of Jesus, I pray, Amen.

Luke 18:10-14 - "Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed: 'God, I thank you that I am not like other people--robbers, evildoers, adulterers--or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.' But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, 'God, have mercy on me, a sinner.' I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted. "
