A Prayer for Courage in the Face of Fear
“Now Peter sat without in the palace: and a damsel came unto him, saying, Thou also wast with Jesus of Galilee.” — Matthew 26:69
Heavenly Father,
As I bow my head before You today, I am reminded of the time when Your beloved disciple Peter found himself amidst fear and doubt. In Matthew 26:69, we read, "Now Peter sat without in the palace: and a damsel came unto him, saying, Thou also wast with Jesus of Galilee." Lord, I come to You recognizing the challenges we face in our daily lives, the moments when we sit in silence and our faith is questioned, just like Peter on that fateful night.
Father, I thank You for the examples found in Your Word. Peter, a man who walked closely with You, grappled with his identity and his faith during a moment of adversity. I confess that I often find myself sitting 'without'—isolated, fearful, or in doubt, much like Peter was that night. In these moments, help me, Lord, to remember Your unwavering faithfulness.
You, O God, provide light in the darkness, guidance in confusion, and strength in weakness. As I reflect on Peter’s moment of denial, I realize that he was placed in a setting fraught with danger and uncertainty. His heart must have raced, knowing what lay at stake. Similarly, there are times when I feel the weight of the world pressing against me, where being associated with You—Jesus of Galilee—seems daunting.
Lord, grant me courage in the face of adversity. When I am confronted by those who question my faith, give me the words to speak with boldness. Help me to stand firm, knowing that You have called me to be a light in this world. Just as Peter faltered when he was pressed by the young damsel, I too sometimes shrink back from expressing my love and commitment to You. Forgive me for those times, and fortify my spirit, so that I may declare boldly the praises of my Savior.
Father, I ask that You help me to delve into the depths of Your Word, seeking strength and assurance from the Scriptures. May the story of Peter remind me of both his shortcomings and the redemptive grace You offered him afterward. It is through his journey that I see the beauty in Your mercy. Just as You restored Peter, I believe You can restore my spirit when I stumble in my commitment to You.
With each new day, give me opportunities to demonstrate my faith. May my life reflect the truths I have learned; let my actions speak louder than my words. Help me to relentlessly pursue a deeper relationship with You, so that my identity as a follower of Christ is unshakeable. Even when my heart races before doubt or intimidation, remind me that I am rooted in Your everlasting love.
Lord, let me be a vessel of Your love and grace. Help me to reach out to those who are unsure, just as Peter was once unsure. Use my testimony to encourage others to be anchored in You. I pray that my encounters will lead others to feel Your embrace, just as I have felt it time and time again.
In moments of uncertainty and fear, let me remember not just Peter’s denial, but his ultimate restoration, and the powerful impact he had on the early church when filled with Your Spirit. May I encounter love and kindness, even to those who challenge my beliefs.
Thank You, Lord, for Your steadfast presence. Forgive me for the times I have hidden my faith. Help me move forward boldly, carrying the name of Jesus with pride, knowing that through You, there is redemption and hope.
In Your mighty and precious name, I pray; Amen.

Matthew 26:69-75 - "Now Peter was sitting out in the courtyard, and a servant girl came to him. “You also were with Jesus of Galilee,” she said. But he denied it before them all. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he said. Then he went out to the gateway, where another servant girl saw him and said to the people there, “This fellow was with Jesus of Nazareth.” He denied it again, with an oath: “I don’t know the man!” After a little while, those standing there went up to Peter and said, “Surely you are one of them; your accent gives you away.” Then he began to call down curses, and he swore to them, “I don’t know the man!” Immediately a rooster crowed. Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken: “Before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.” And he went outside and wept bitterly."
