A Prayer for Reconciliation and Peace
"Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift. Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison. Verily I say unto thee, Thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou hast paid the uttermost farthing." - Matthew 5:23-26

O Heavenly Father,
I come before You with a humble heart, in recognition of the truth that Your Son, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, shared with us in the Gospel according to Matthew, chapter 5, verses 23 through 26. In His wisdom, He taught us that our relationships with one another are of paramount importance to You. The words ‘Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift’ resonate deeply within my spirit.
Lord, I acknowledge that there have been times when my heart has held onto grievances or misunderstandings against my brothers and sisters. I confess, Father, that I have sometimes let pride and anger eclipse the love and grace that You have so freely given to me. I ask for Your forgiveness, as I am aware of the burden that these feelings can create—not only in my life but also in the lives of those around me. Lord, Your desire for unity among Your children is clear. You have called us to love one another and to seek restoration in our relationships. Therefore, I pause my worship, my service, my sacrifices, and I choose to seek reconciliation first.
In this moment of prayer, I ask that You soften my heart. Help me to see my brother and sister through Your eyes, to understand their pain, their struggles, and their worth as precious creations of Yours. Lord, I desire to let go of any resentment that has taken root in my heart. I pray for the courage to reach out to those I have wronged or who have wronged me. Give me the wisdom to approach them with grace and humility. Help me to articulate my feelings honestly yet kindly, so that true healing may happen.
Lord, let reconciliation be my first step, and let forgiveness be my guiding principle. Teach me that in the Kingdom of Heaven, true worship involves reconciliation. In my desire to honor You with my gifts, I recognize the necessity to prioritize the relationships that You have placed in my life. As Your Word states, ‘Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him.’ Help me to bring any conflicts to resolution swiftly. May I not allow disputes to fester, but rather face them courageously and lovingly, resolving differences before they escalate into greater troubles.
I also pray for those whom I might have hurt—Father, touch their hearts with Your peace. May they know that I am seeking to make amends and to restore the bond we once shared. I pray that they might be open to forgiveness and reconciliation as well. In doing so, let us grow in love and unity, reflecting the very heart of Christ in our relationships.
Moreover, Lord, help me to remember the serious implications of unresolved conflicts, as noted in the latter part of this passage. ‘Lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison.’ I understand the weight of these warnings and the chains that unforgiveness can place upon my spirit. Release me from any bondage of bitterness and resentment, and let me walk in freedom and joy, acknowledging the beauty of reconciliation.
Finally, Lord, I thank You for the gift of grace that allows me to start anew each day. Help me to embody this grace in my interactions with others. May I be a vessel of Your love, a beacon of hope, and a proponent of peace in a world that so desperately needs it. May my actions reflect my commitment to uphold Your commandments faithfully, prioritizing my relationships with others as an act of worship to You.
In Jesus’ name, I pray,
Amen.
