A Prayer for Forgiveness and Humility
"And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors." - Matthew 6:12

O Lord, our Heavenly Father, we humbly come before You today, seeking Your grace and mercy. We are reminded of the profound words found in Matthew 6:12, where it is declared, “And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.” These powerful words resonate deeply within our hearts, urging us to reflect upon the importance of forgiveness in our walk of faith and in our daily lives.
Gracious Father, we acknowledge our own shortcomings and the weight of our transgressions. We recognize that our sins create a chasm between us and You, a separation that weighs heavily upon our souls. We have often turned away from Your teachings, acted in selfishness, and allowed pride to govern our hearts. In those moments of weakness, we have accumulated debts—debts of disobedience, debts of anger, and debts of unkindness. We come before You, Lord, with repentant hearts, desiring Your forgiveness.
Lord, we ask for Your mercy to cleanse us from the stain of sin. Wash us with the blood of Your Son, Jesus Christ, who bore our sins and was made sin for us so that we might become the righteousness of God. Help us to acknowledge these debts and sincerely repent, realizing the depths of Your compassion and love for us, even in our unworthiness. Although we have failed You, Your arms remain open to receive us back. We are grateful for Your mercy that extends beyond our understanding.
As we seek Your forgiveness, we are reminded of the reciprocal nature of this divine request. It is paramount that we also extend grace to those who have wronged us. Forgive us, O Lord, for the times we have held onto bitterness or nurtured grudges. Forgive us for our unwillingness to forgive, for our hearts have sometimes grown cold, and our spirits have become burdened by the weight of unmerited anger towards our debtors. We ask You to soften our hearts and transform our minds.
Help us to remember that, like us, others are fallible and flawed. Just as we long for Your forgiveness, help us to cultivate a spirit of forgiveness towards those who have hurt us, whether intentionally or accidentally. Teach us the importance of humility in these moments, for we are reminded that if we expect to be forgiven by You, we must be willing to forgive others. Grant us the strength, Lord, to release the resentment we may hold in our hearts and replace it with compassion and understanding.
May we mirror the grace that You extend to us in our dealings with others. When faced with betrayal, betrayal of trust, or hurt, help us to remember the cross. Help us to hold tightly to the love that Jesus demonstrated, praying for those who persecute us and rendering good for evil committed against us.
Father, we also recognize that the act of forgiveness is not simply a momentary decision but a continual process. We pray for the patience to walk this path daily. As we release our debts, keep our hearts vigilant against the temptation to revisit the wrongs that we have forgiven. Empower us with Your Spirit to walk in the freedom that comes with release from both our debts and the debts of others.
In our quest for forgiveness, let us hold tightly to the promise of restoration and reconciliation that comes from You. Heal the wounds that linger in our hearts and grant us the grace to extend peace to others.
We ask all these things in the powerful name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, who has taught us the fullness of Your forgiveness. Amen.
