Gracious and Everlasting Father,

We bow our hearts before You today, deeply compelled by the wisdom of Your Word as we meditate on the truth found in Proverbs 17:5: "Whoso mocketh the poor reproacheth his Maker: and he that is glad at calamities shall not be unpunished." Lord, we come to You asking for an awareness of our own hearts and minds, to reflect on how we engage with the marginalized and the downtrodden in our midst.

Father, we acknowledge that You created every individual in Your image, and that each person holds value and worth according to Your divine plan. Forgive us, Lord, for the times we may have turned a blind eye to the struggles of the poor, for the times when we omitted our voices in the fight against injustice, and especially for the moments when we might have found ourselves laughing at or mocking others’ misfortunes. May we never forget that in doing so, we bring reproach not only upon ourselves but upon You, our Maker.

Help us, Lord, to cultivate a spirit of empathy within us. Grant us a tender heart that feels the pain of those who are suffering, those who face the dire consequences of poverty and calamities. Give us the strength to lift them up rather than pushing them down, to walk alongside them in their struggles, and to be a source of hope and healing.

We acknowledge that each life story is unique, fraught with its own challenges and tribulations. The trials faced by the poor in our communities cannot be summarized or belittled. Lord, instill in us a profound understanding of their realities, teach us to listen to their stories, and to respond with compassion rather than ridicule. May our hearts break for what breaks Yours, and lead us to action.

Heavenly Father, remind us continually that we are called to be vessels of Your love and grace in the world. Let our words and actions reflect the kindness that You showed to all, especially to those on the margins. May we stand firm against injustice and be advocates for the voiceless. Help us to see the value in serving others, especially those who may be undergoing the trials of life or who are at the mercy of circumstances beyond their control.

We also recognize, Lord, that the phrase "and he that is glad at calamities shall not be unpunished" carries a profound warning. Teach us to shun the lingering temptation to take pleasure in the downfalls or misfortunes of others, whether it be out of pride or an insidious sense of superiority. Gracious God, cleanse our hearts of such wickedness, help us to mourn with those who mourn rather than to gloat or take satisfaction in their pain. Let us always remember the consequences of our attitudes and actions, for You see all and know all.

As we reflect upon these words from Proverbs, grant us the courage to confront and dismantle any mockery or scorn that arises in our circles or institutions. Strengthen us to call out injustice where we see it and to actively work toward relieving the suffering of the poor. Lead us to build bridges of understanding, compassion, and support, so that no one feels the crushing weight of ridicule or scorn when they face calamity.

Lord, we seek Your heart for the poor and for those enduring calamities. We long to be instruments of Your peace and carriers of Your justice. Fill us with Your Spirit, and guide us into a lifestyle that embraces humility and kindness, and in so doing, we will bring glory to Your name.
