A Prayer for Justice and Humility
"But he that did his neighbour wrong thrust him away, saying, Who made thee a ruler and a judge over us?" - Acts 7:27

Heavenly Father,
We come before You today with hearts burdened by the injustices of this world. We humbly bow in Your presence, acknowledging that You are our Creator, our Redeemer, and our ultimate Judge. As we reflect on the words of Acts 7:27, “But he that did his neighbour wrong thrust him away, saying, Who made thee a ruler and a judge over us?” we recognize the pain and frustration that arise when authority is questioned, and justice is obscured by pride and self-serving motives.
Lord, we ask that You open our eyes to the truth in this passage. Help us to discern the moments in our own lives where we might be like the one who rejected the voice of reason, blinded by our egos and prejudices. Teach us humility, Lord, that we might not thrust away those who seek to lead us in righteousness. Let us not respond with hostility or defiance when we are confronted with the truth or when others speak into our lives with authenticity. May we learn to listen and engage in dialogue, regardless of the discomfort it may bring.
God, we pray for a spirit of unity in our communities. Many times, division arises when we fail to acknowledge the value and dignity of those around us. May we remember that every single person is made in Your image and deserves respect and compassion. When we see our neighbors wronged, grant us the courage to speak up and act in justice, rather than turning away or allowing the injustices to continue unchecked. Help us to stand as advocates for those who cannot stand for themselves, to be the voice for the voiceless as You called us to be.
We recognize, Lord, that conflict is part of the human experience, but it is how we respond to conflict that defines us. Conversely, we seek Your wisdom in resolving disputes peacefully, as well as the integrity to confront wrongdoing with a spirit of love rather than with a heart of vengeance. Teach us to be peacemakers, understanding that in striving for justice, we must act with humility rather than using our positions as a means to dominate others or tear them down. Let our actions reflect our commitment to Your teachings and to following Christ’s example of love and service.
Moreover, Lord, we lift up our leaders and those in positions of authority in our communities and nations. We pray that they will govern with wisdom, integrity, and compassion. Remind them that true authority is rooted in service and accountability to the people, rather than in power and dominion. May they act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly before You. Grant them the ability to hear the cries of the marginalized and the wisdom to turn their policies towards love and justice.
We also ask for forgiveness, Lord, for the times we have been complicit or have remained silent in the presence of injustice. Cleanse our hearts and renew our spirits. Make us vessels of Your peace and agents of change, willing to stand up against wrongs, even when it may be easier to remain silent or distant. Give us strength when we encounter resistance, knowing that the path of righteousness often leads to opposition.
As we continue to navigate this world filled with conflict and heartache, let Your Word, especially Acts 7:27, echo in our hearts. May we never forget the importance of being just and humble leaders in our own spheres of influence. Empower us to bring light where there is darkness and love where there is hate, always seeking to lift others rather than push them away.
In the name of Jesus, who is our ultimate Judge and Leader, we pray,
Amen.
